We’ve been fat shaming people for decades, and yet weight problems are still skyrocketing. Shaming people into weight loss is obviously an abject failure. So is the diet industry. We are targeting and emotionally abusing people in this society, and singling out bodies that are not “ideal”.
The thicker the thighs the sweeter the prize shirt
Here’s a thought: compassion, respect, fighting the environmental contributors and the terrible Western diet and emphasizing regular enjoyable movement, regardless of size! Why is Shape getting on the bopo train if their magazine’s main purpose appears to be restriction/making your body smaller? Lots of contradictions in their messaging. Am I missing something? They won’t be getting any of my dollars, but if the money motivation means they sometimes publish things that aren’t reprehensible, then at least some good messages are getting through to their readers. But the inconsistency of their message may do more harm than good in the end. The thicker the thighs the sweeter the prize. People are not continually getting fatter. This is a toxic lie spread by the media and directly contradicted by population data. Ditching the idea that there is such a thing as ‘weight problems’ is also essential. No one’s weight is a ‘problem’; the only problems are fatphobia and thin privilege. Also, the health issues associated with being fat are purely correlative. Some of those said health issues have actually been connected to the weight yo-yoing that comes from diet and weight loss culture. Whether you are underweight, at an “ideal” weight or morbidly obese, no one should be treated like garbage and put down because of being so. I don’t care if you have every health problem in the world because of your weight. It doesn’t give people the right to you tell you what an awful person you are.

Proud of your body!
Treat others like you want to be treated. Years of being told that there is no place for us in the world, medical neglect (insofar as blaming every single solitary thing on weight) from doctors, struggling continually to be accepted as worthy people capable of contributing to society in a meaningful way, and enduring verbal abuse from strangers can cause issues? Who did fucking know? Why does this feel like Shape is jumping on the BodyPosi train for (dare I say it) money? Not gonna get this chubby girls dollars. They can keep their meaningless political correctness. I’ll believe that they really mean it when the tone of the magazine changes to a health/fitness at any size format. Then, and only then, will I accept that they are actually producing a magazine that caters to all people – even those with rolls. If they wanna stay a fitness magazine catering to a specific body type, that’s cool too – all they have to do is jump off the BodyPosi train with their tails tucked between their legs because they’re not welcome here if they only want to profit off of other fucking peoples pain.
