It may not be your cup of tea, but Criterion’s mission has been “A continuing series of important classic and contemporary films.” This film is an important cultural artifact of 1980s cinema, therefore earning its place in the collection. If you don’t like it, no one is forcing you to purchase it. Hughes’ films are critically important to many moviegoers and captured the zeitgeist of their era, as well as being very much the vision of an auteur. If that’s not a good enough defense of their inclusion, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s not Ingmar Bergman but it’s still some damn good filmmaking. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and The Rock all got released. Physical media sales are going down. Every now and then they do something that will bring in a lot of sales in order to keep releasing ones that might not. Plenty of other great films in the collection so who cares if a more mainstream film gets released every now and then?
