The RN on lunch or on break returns to the floor until help arrives. I aready said 2 RN’s are required to work the inpatient floor. Nurse strong aint nobody got time to play cards shirt One can be in the ER and one can return to the Floor. If they need more help, that is up to the Charge nurse. I also said staff can be pulled from the surgery floor. Think before asking a stupid question

By and large, larger facilities are more adequately staffed per patient volume than SMALLER hospitals. RN’s at bigger hospitals have orderly’s to help out with patients when needed. Smaller hospitals do NOT have this LUXURY. I was a patient in Mayo and they have had orderly’s helping out nurses with patient care on the floor and in surgery. Mayo has been instrumental in using orderly’s since the 1970’s. CNA’s are also available at larger hospitals. anyone that works a shift of more than 5 hours should get a mandated break. Nurse strong aint nobody got time to play cards shirt If a nurse is working a 12 hour shift she/he should be given a minimum of two 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute meal break. Minimum! Whether the nurse gets to leave the ward or not is not the issue (though she should be able to if possible to make phone calls to family, get food etc). Larger hospitals often have more staff but then they have more patients too. I have never been at a hospital where the staffing margins weren’t at the edge. Why do you think they need so many staffers to work 12 hour shifts?
Take your time and get your tee
I worked in a Nursing home there were 2 nurses one on one wing the other on the other wing and 2 care aides on each wing at night for 150+ residents . Some do not realize even at night residents need care . And even with 8 people looking after 150+residents other than feedings they still needed care and breaks are rare at night That was it. Two people on one entire floor and no one answering the phone on other floors. So yes laws are needed to ensure that small hospitals are properly staffed and those nurses are getting the breaks they need. I doubt my nurses got to eat or pee the whole night and I doubt they got to any other night. Even once they got assistance from another floor that person only stayed until I was stable.
