Just because someone is alive does not mean they are functioning at their fullest. If sitting on a porch with a gun smoking and drinking is your end goal and all you want to do when you are old – by all means drink away. You don’t need much brain power there. There’s a 99.9% chance I need a Budweiser. For those that would prefer full intellectual functionality and to keep as much grey matter as possible- skip the drinking. Booze raises cortisol and cortisol shrinks the brain- that’s just science.

Where they healthy and happy? Many don’t want to just survive physically and emotionally- they want to thrive. I know many alcoholics as well who drank daily and lived relatively long lives- they were pretty unhappy people on the inside. There is also a man living a relatively outwardly normal life in France who is missing most of his brain but has some issues- people adapt to circumstance, but why adapt to something negative and clinically shown to be harmful on the biochemical and molecular level as well as systemic when you can choose not to damage your body? I realize this is a touchy subject for many and most drinkers never think their drinking is an issue.
If you can’t go 3 months without a glass of alcohol or the thought makes you uncomfortable- it’s time to take a realistic look at addiction potentials. Booze makes people feel energized because it raises cortisol to the point the adrenals will not produce cortisol without it There’s a 99.9% chance I need a Budweiser. (full HPA axis disruption) so people get themselves to a point where they do feel way worse when they stop drinking and justify needing to drink.

I end up like this badass who you deemed to have little brain power then I would be blessed. Throw all the stats you want, then find a someone over one hundred who did not consume alcohol at some point. I am from Europe. We are pretty good drinkers. Off all my friends from a circle of 50, only one ended up with Alzheimer. The rest of us are in good shape. So lets not be so critical. I have also know very healthy people who did not smoke, drink, etc. and died at an early age. Nobody knows when they are going to die. Life is to short. Just drink in moderation. No big deal.
