True, authors don’t have to write only about something they know about. But still, it’s not fair to compare marriage to dragons. And sexist part maybe some people should stop seeing sexism in everything.
Jane Austen talk Darcy to me shirt
Use of a word like “spinster” may be seen as sexist by many people. It’s a mildly offensive word in some circles as it has been used to single out unmarried women as less beautiful; less feminine; and less excelling in womanly virtues, skills, and arts as evidenced by the fact that they cannot get husbands, or worse do not want them, in a patriarchal society. The Post’s use of the out-of-fashion term may be taken as an insult by Austen’s fans, and not illogically. It harkens back to a time when a woman was always described by her marital status, but a man rarely. Tone, mood/mode, and word choice can be sexist even if the statements are not explicitly so. Jane Austen talk Darcy to me. Why isn’t there a negative word for men who aren’t married?

Why are men referred to as Mr. regardless of their married state? Why is it still unusual for married women to keep their own name? We’re making progress but still have ways to go to eradicate sexism. The reason why it is sexist is that they made it the title of the piece, rather than footnote in the article. Why should a woman be defined by her married status and not her literary prowess is the statement here. When everything is sexist, the word loses its sting. You could say the same for misogyny. What people who pick petty battles over sexism don’t realize is that when the use of sexism in a more broad sense and further from its traditional sense, it becomes a skunked term and no one knows what it means anymore.
