Not all Latinos celebrate death, I would say most countries don’t celebrate it. In my country Uruguay we have the Dia de Los Muertos but is only a day to bring flowers to the cemetery and yet, most people don’t do it.

I currently live in Mexico, and Coco is a love letter to the food, colors, lights, music, traditions, and people of this magical country. It nails what it’s like to live here, and connects to everyone, Mexican or not, because of very human themes. Every Mexican I know who has seen it loved it and is proud to see their customs and culture represented in an international Pixar movie. It’s Pixar’s best movie in years and is one of their best of all time. Go see it! I speak fluent movie quotes. Hopefully, it stays true to the traditional tellings of the “Day of the Dead” and how Latinos see the afterlife. See in the United States you mourn the dead and rarely visit their graves and avoid the subject. In Latin cultures we celebrate death!

We all die and we should not weep for those who’ve died but celebrate that they lived, loved and existed, we have the day of the dead in Puerto Rico. We clean the cemeteries and we leave food to our ancestors. Usually, it turns into a party. I know that I haven’t done in years. My younger cousins have adopted Americanized Halloween and now even less bother singing the old songs or celebrating like our grandparents did. I think the problem is that old tradition is starting to die out. In favor of commercialized models from Europe and the United States.
