I never expected to get so many responses and I definitely did not expect the internet to be so civil. So, first off, thank you to everyone Be a pineapple stand tall wear a crown and be sweet on the inside shirt who shared their opinions, feelings, experiences, etc. on such a difficult topic without resorting to any of the usual internet shenanigans.

Secondly, the first thing I wanted to add in this edit was a statement supporting the idea that the types of insensitive comments, “jokes”, etc. described in the HONY post absolutely need to be confronted in some way. We should not, as individuals and communities, normalize this behavior. Be a pineapple stand tall wear a crown and be sweet on the inside shirt I will say that I think we can approach these situations in a variety of ways and that it is not always necessary to try and label people as “racists” as that type of confrontation can sometimes backfire.
Take it and hang out with it
This leads me to my final edit. I initially made the very strong statement of saying that the people discussed in the HONY post were definitely not racist. I think that is now too strong of a statement. What I should have said, and what I now think, is that it is entirely possible they are racist. I also think it is possible they are not. I feel as if the teeny tiny information given in the HONY post leaves me with not nearly enough information. I want to continue to advocate for the idea that people can say rude or insensitive things and still not be racists; they could merely be reflecting old habits, they could unaware of the hurt their comments cause, etc. but, with the power the word “racist” carries, I think sometimes we use that label too casually.
