I’m pretty sure people know about autism. If they could learn how to stop trying to find a cure and just accept that some people don’t fit into the “normal” box and that’s okay, that’d be great.
Autism just be kind shirt
I am in complete agreement that looking for a cure is a pipedream that distracts from real ways to help people with autism. However, I think that awareness is generally useful. Though right now, autism awareness month tends to revolve around so-called experts shilling their books and conjecture about the causes for autism, I think that eventually, that will turn back around as people with autism start to tell their own stories. Autism just be kind. It’s important to note that psychological disorders are only diagnosed when they become a frustration for the individual. Many people with high-functioning autism from previous generations found coping mechanisms before it was diagnosed and therefore, they “don’t have autism”.

However, in the economic system of today, accommodation to share, equal working conditions make those whose needs make those working conditions insufficient easier to frustrate, requiring diagnosis sooner. It’s for this reason why we hear far more voices about so-called experts than those who have high-functioning autism because high-functioning autism is more so a product of society than it is of the individual. People with high-functioning autism have always existed, but it’s only recently become apparent that there are differences. I nanny a boy who is mild on the Autistic scale. I haven’t done as much research as I probably should have by now, but this list relieves me quite a bit: autistic (or another mental difference) or not, I’ve always applied these exact things to all adolescents I’ve known or had interactions with because these are the exact things I struggled with as a kid. I was very different from my peers. I learned differently, interacted differently, and communicated more on different levels than the people around me. And more and more children are the same way.
